Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is funding that is allocated to schools for pupils to support disadvantaged pupils.

The principles informing the use of the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) are that:

  • school provision should meet the needs of all learners
  • a range of factors can be used to categorise pupils as being socially disadvantaged, including those that are eligible for free school meals (FSM) and some looked after children (LAC)
  • pupils eligible for free school meals sometimes can have other factors that can be a barrier to learning (e.g. special educational needs)
  • the school will strive to ensure that vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils have their needs quickly identified in order to overcome any barriers identified
  • the PPG will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving FSM’s will be in receipt of Pupil Premium interventions at any one time
  • a high priority focus for spending of the PPG will relate to securing the best rates of progress for vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils

We have used the EEF Guide to the Pupil Premium to inform our thinking when formulating our plans. Click here to find out more.

We therefore have a tiered approach to the Pupil premium spending:

1. Quality First Teaching

2. Targeted Academic Support and Intervention

3. Wider Strategies (attendance, behaviour and social/emotional support)

PE and Sports Premium Funding

All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers.

Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

The PE and sport premium helps our school in achieving these aims, by providing additional funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered at Plaistow.

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport that they offer in order to:

  • develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that the school provides
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

We ensure the successful expenditure of the PE and Sports Premium by:

  • ensuring the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  • raise the profile of PE and sport across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increasing the confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • ensuring that a broad range of sports and activities is offered to all pupils
  • ensuring participation in competitive sport
